#68: Is Your Child a Picky Eater?

…various studies suggest that between one and two-thirds of parents describe their young child as “picky” at some point” -Dr. Katja Rowell, relational childhood feeding specialist

Many parents lament that their child is picky, will barely eat, and rejects vegetables. This is a common concern as up to 50% of parents of toddlers describe their child as picky and up to two thirds of parents will describe their child as picky at some point.

The truth is that as babies become toddlers, preschoolers and school age children their eating habits may change as their development changes. In addition, each child is different as they have different personalities, eating styles and food preferences. This can be confusing and frustrating for parents.

However, in my practice the majority of what parents label as “picky eating” isn’t what I consider true pickiness.

In this episode, I discuss what I think causes children to seem like “picky” eaters and what you can do about it.

Of note, there is such a thing as EXTREME picky eating and there ARE children who may have conditions that limit their food intake or variety to a concerning level. If your child’s eating is interfering with their physical, social or emotional development it is beyond typical picky eating or childhood behavior. Developmental or genetic disorders, ASD, sensory disorders, anatomical problems or even medical problems that affect their appetite and intake. Please make sure that you consult with a medical professional for medical advice.
