#69: Extreme Picky Eating with Dr. Katja Rowell
“A more extreme picky eater will come to the table and see that the smoothie is purple instead of pink and get really upset, have the 90-minute meltdown where they’re not able to necessarily soothe themselves...there’s a lot more anxiety” -Dr. Katja Rowell, relational childhood feeding specialist
In this very special episode, I interview a family practice physician who is an expert at feeding children who have extreme food selectivity. I really loved her book, Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating: A Step-by-Step Guide for Overcoming Selective Eating, Food Aversion, and Feeding Disorders because it was very compassionate, loving and practical. After reading her book, I knew she would be a perfect guest for the Intuitive Eating series on Veggie Doctor Radio.
What we discuss:
The difference between typical picky eating and extreme picky eating
What it’s like to be the parent of an extreme picky eater
The definition of a competent eater
How misguided concerns about weight can perpetuate eating problems
The worry cycle involved in feeding your child
What is the STEPS+ program and how it can help you with your extreme picky child
What is a meal opportunity
Resources for families with extreme picky eaters
More about my honored guest:
Katja Rowell is a relational childhood feeding specialist. During her time in practice as a family doctor, she was struck by the prevalence of disordered eating and feeding challenges and related health problems. Rowell believes that establishing a healthy feeding relationship- in essence- how children are fed is the missing piece in addressing disordered eating and weight dysregulation. Rowell has developed a special interest in selective, or picky, eating and is passionate about sharing a responsive feeding philosophy that reduces conflict and supports the child's internal drive to grow up and do well with eating.
Described as "academic, but warm and down-to-earth," Rowell is a popular speaker and is the author of three books, including Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating and Conquering Picky Eating for Teens and Adults.
