#214: Body Weight Is Not a Choice: The Genetics of Body Size with Dr. Giles Yeo

“Obesity becomes a disease when the fat in your body is too much that it begins to cause you health problems.” —Dr. Giles Yeo

In this engaging episode, I interview geneticist, Dr. Giles Yeo, about the complexity of body weight and how the size of our body is influenced by our genes. You’ll hear his take on what determines excess fat, whether it’s a disease and whether we are individually responsible for the size of our bodies. You definitely don’t want to miss this episode.

Some of the topics covered in today’s episode include:

  • Genetics of body size and weight

  • Is there such a thing as ideal body weight? Is body weight a choice?

  • Are people responsible for the size of their bodies? What about the size of their children’s bodies?

  • How do our genes influence our behavior around food

  • Improving health and metabolic markers with dietary changes without intentional weight loss

  • Thoughts on de novo lipogenesis in a high carb low-fat whole foods diet

  • Message to parents who are concerned about the size of their child’s body
