#115: Environmental Exposures and Your Child's Health with James and Dahlia Marin (pediatric series)

“I remember just having a very convicting moment of feeling “that will not be my life” and really determined to make a change.” -Dahlia Marin, MarriedtoHealth

Dahlia went to see the doctor at the young age of 17 because she wasn’t feeling well. She left the visit with not just one but a handful of serious diagnoses and several prescriptions. Like a good patient, she started taking the medications, but to her surprise she felt worse rather than better. James grew up using food to cope with his emotions and became known for his large size. They met in college and after reading The China Study they transitioned to a plant-based diet and the rest is history.

James also became interested in environmental nutrition and combined with his insatiable appetite for knowledge has become an expert in how exposures from our environment can affect health.

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I have an eye-opening and upbeat discussion with James and Dahlia Marin, plant-based registered dietitians and power couple. We talk about very interesting topics and how we can apply this knowledge to raising healthy children.

We discuss:

  • Their plant-based journeys and the health struggles they each had before making the change

  • The definition of environmental nutrition and the “exposome”

  • What we should care about our environmental exposures

  • What parents can do to reduce environmental exposures for their children

  • How our farming practices are affecting our health and what might be a better alternative

  • What supplements they recommend for children

  • What they wish more people knew

  • The personal habit they are each most proud of
