#122: How Mindfulness is Essential for Every Parent with Dr. Seema Desai
“So much of parenting is about YOU not about the child.” -Dr. Seema Desai
Dr. Seema Desai dreamed of becoming a mother and would even browse children’s stores for fun before she was pregnant with her first child. To her shock and dismay, after he son was born she felt completely opposite of what she had imagined. This plagued her with guilt and shame. She knew something wasn’t right and she became persistent until she finally got help. Her experience with postpartum depression launched her on a wellbeing journey that eventually led her to discover the healing and centering benefits of mindfulness. She is now so passionate about mindfulness and how it should be part of our day-to-day lives as women and parents.
In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I have an enlightening and very authentic conversation with Dr. Desai about parenting, mindfulness and seeing things in a different light.
We discuss:
How raw and authentic story of postpartum depression and how it prompted her to begin a mindfulness practice
How mindfulness has influenced her parenting
Evaluating our own expectations for ourselves and our children and how this impacts how we parent
How we can incorporate mindfulness into our routines
Tips on teaching mindfulness to children
How mindset can be used to approach healthy habits and behaviors (including dental health!)
What she wishes more parents knew
The personal habit she is most proud of

More about my honored guest:
Namaste from Austin, Texas! I’m Seema. I wear a lot of hats—wife, mom, dentist, and yoga teacher-in-training, to name a few. I have a really wide range of interests, but the closest to my heart are yoga, mindfulness towards ourselves, each other, and the planet. I love being a mom, but my journey as a mother did not start as I expected. I found yoga as relief from postpartum depression, and as time went on and my yoga practice deepened, the mindfulness began to follow and blossom. I came to the realization that I find dentistry fulfilling because I get to help people in physical pain, but that through yoga, I could help people not only in physical pain, but emotional pain as well. This epiphany served almost like a seed in my mind. My Instagram and this blog are the fruits of this epiphany. I hope my posts offer you inspiration to live a more mindful lifestyle, and help you find more peace and joy. I always love hearing from my readers, so feel free to connect with me here, via e-mail, or on Instagram
