#95: Waste Reduction in Your Home with Alyssa Sikora

“Just trying to minimize our impact through these small changes that you can make that should be the goal. If we all collectively did that imagine how much waste we would reduce.” -Alyssa Sikora

The amount of waste that we produce in the United States is enormous. Each person in our country throws away 4.5 pounds of trash PER DAY, that adds up to 268 MILLION tons per year. That’s an incredible amount of waste. Much of that waste is composed of materials that will take millions of years to decompose. These items end up in landfills and in our oceans and it just isn’t sustainable. Pretty soon we won’t have anywhere left to put all of this trash.

When it comes to reducing our consumption of products and reduction of waste, there are so many places that we can start and it may seem overwhelming. I wanted this episode to help spark ideas for how you can reduce waste in your own home.

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I talk with Alyssa Sikora, a plant-based mama and zero-waste and slow-living advocate. She has been practicing this lifestyle for a while now and she has some great tips and ideas that you may consider implementing in your own household.

We discuss:

  • Her plant-based journey

  • How she first became interested in reducing waste produced in her home

  • The definition of “zero waste”

  • The easiest place to start reducing waste

  • Tips for zero waste newbies

  • What she found to be her hardest habit to maintain as she raises kids

  • Insidious waste producers in the home

  • The definition of slow living

  • What she wishes more people knew

  • The personal habit she is most proud of
