#93: Beginners Guide to Reducing your Carbon Footprint with Kate Gottlieb

“The climate is changing and I see these changes when I go home to the rainforest.” -Kate Gottlieb

This is the second episode in my environmental sustainability and climate change series! In this episode we are going to learn about sustainability.

Kate Gottlieb grew up in the rainforest of Washington state and has always loved exploring the outdoors. She has made her career out of helping hospitals reduce waste and become more eco-friendly and her experience in this arena has taught her a lot about environmental sustainability and carbon footprints.

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I have an open discussion with my friend Kate about sustainability, carbon footprints and what we can each do NOW to help our earth heal.

We discuss:

  • Why she’s so passionate about protecting the earth’s environment

  • What sustainability actually means

  • The top 3 threats to our planet right now

  • What “carbon footprint” means and why we should all be mindful of our own

  • The scope of the waste issue

  • How our diet is related to environmental sustainability

  • Why recycling is not the answer to our problems

  • What we can each start doing right now to make an impact and contribute to the solution

  • What she wishes more people knew

  • What personal habit she is most proud of

More about my honored guest:

Kate has been working in the sustainability field for about six years. During this time, Kate helped Virginia Mason Memorial implement their EnvrioMason Sustainability Program covering initiatives around Healthier Food in Healthcare, Leaner Energy, Less Waste, Safer Chemicals, Less Water use, environmental preferable purchasing, alternative transportation and lowering VMM’s overall carbon footprint. This helped Memorial establish some best practices and national environmental awards for their efforts and impact. Leaving Memorial, Kate founded Northwest Sustainability and Wellbeing, and helped Tree Top initiate their Creating Shared Value; Corporate Social Responsibility program.  Kate’s degrees in Public and Community Health drives her passion for environmental sustainability and environmental change to influence behavior change. “Now that I am a mother, going to work every day has a new meaning, I am determined to help minimize our footprint for the next generation.” Kate hopes that she can influence others through education and outreach to drive policy and guidelines for organizational change to help the environment. In Kate’s free time she enjoys spending time with her family in the outdoors and planning new adventures and experiences.
