#90: Constipation and Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Plant-Based Pediatric GI Doctor Maryelle Vonlanthen
“ The typical scenario that we have is toddler changes their diet; they turn a year old, they’re introduced to nuggets and milk, and the next thing you know, they have a hard stool and the stool was painful. The toddler who’s smart, says, “not doing that again.” -Dr. Maryelle Vonlanthen
Dr. Maryelle Vonlanthen is a pediatric gastroenterologist who is fired up and passionate about the gut health and our diet. After experiencing her own health transformation with a plant-based diet, she has learned how this way of eating (one that emphasizes plants and whole foods) can lead to a healthy GI system.
In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, Dr. Vonlanthen and I have a very in-depth conversation about food, gut bacteria and a healthy GI system. Dr. V is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about pediatric gastroenterology and is able to disseminate much helpful information in this episode.
We discuss:
Her plant-based journey
The effect of diet on GI health
The gut microbiome and the relationship to gut health
How breast feeding impacts the gut microbiome
Her approach to childhood constipation
The definition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
How diet can lead to or potentially reverse IBD
Probiotics, their uses and if we should be taking them every day
What she wishes more parents knew (it’s about milk!!)
What personal habit she is most proud of
