#71: Why We Should ALL Eat More Whole Plant Foods
“I know of nothing else in medicine that can come close to what a plant-based diet can do. In theory, if everyone were to adopt this, I really believe we can cut health care costs by seventy to eighty percent. That's amazing. And it all comes from understanding nutrition, applying nutrition, and just watching the results.” -Dr. T. Colin Campbell, American Biochemist who focuses on the effect of nutrition on long-term health
When it comes to nutrition, I can get pretty passionate. That is definitely the case in this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio. Did you know that diet is implicated in many of the top 10 causes of death in the United States? It makes sense when we take a look at the source of our calories in the Standard American Diet. Ninety-four percent of the calories in the standard American diet are derived from animal products and processed foods with only 6% coming from whole plant foods.
Whole plant foods are beneficial because they are nutrient-dense: packed with phytochemical, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as well as FIBER!
In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I lay out the reasons why eating WHOLE PLANT FOODS benefits the human body and why you may want to consider increasing your intake of these foods.
Summary of key benefits of a WFPB diet
Increased polyphenol intake
Improved endothelial cell function
Decreased TMAO production
Improved microbiome profile
Decreased cholesterol (similar to statin therapy)
Improved insulin sensitivity and glycemic control
Decreased blood glucose
Decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure
Changes in epigenetics
Increased wellbeing
Decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer
Remember, it DOESN’T have to be ALL-OR-NOTHING. What can you start doing TODAY to eat more whole plant foods?
