#267: Fasting Series — Fasting as an adjunct to chemotherapy treatment with Alison Tierney

"I knew that you could do everything right and you can still get cancer or a chronic disease. But again, I come back to the, I did what I could and that gives me the empowerment to move forward and that I still have some control and I'm going to do everything I can in my control to live a healthy life, prevent its recurrence and just move forward from there." –Alison Tierney

In the last episode of the fasting series, we hear from Alison Tierney, a plant-based dietitian who used fasting in her chemotherapy protocol to help manage side effects. We learn about her cancer journey and what she is doing now as a cancer survivor.

Dr. Yami’s Episode Takeaways:

  • We can alter our habits and behaviors to reduce our risk of disease, but it is never a 100% guarantee

  • Don’t sit too long trying to figure out WHY you developed a certain condition or blaming yourself for it - instead, take action on the things you can control

  • Fasting before and after chemotherapy can improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and decrease the side effects.

  • Fasting protocols during chemo will vary from person to person and should be medically supervised.

  • Cold capping is a technique that can be used to prevent hair loss caused by chemotherapy.

  • Nutrition can be an incredible complement to cancer therapy and can help improve side effects and quality of life during and after treatment.
