#139: Vegan Skin Care and Cosmetics with Kari Knight DCNP

“It can be manufactured in a lab and be vegan. You don’t have to mix a cauldron up in your kitchen of ingredients to make it be vegan.” -Kari Knight, DCNP

Kari was mostly vegetarian most of her life. She integrated a whole food plant-based diet for health reasons, but then her heart opened up to the ethical and compassionate reasons for veganism. Still early on in her journey, she is learning and exploring. Because she is a passionate dermatology nurse practitioner, I reached out to Kari to help me understand more about vegan skin care and cosmetics so that I could be better informed and share this information with my listeners. This is an introductory conversation on this topic and I am sure we will re-visit these questions again, but she gives us a great place to start so that we can make better informed decisions in our own skin care.

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I chat with Kari Knight, DCNP about vegan skin care and cosmetics.

We discuss:

  • Her vegan and plant-based journey

  • What different terms such as cruelty-free, not tested on animals and vegan actually mean

  • Whether these designations are controlled or regulated and what certifications can be granted

  • If a product can be cruelty-free and not vegan

  • What common ingredients can be found in skin care and cosmetics that are derived from animals

  • Where we can go to identify brands or product lines that are vegan and cruelty-free

  • What surprised her the most about vegan skincare and cosmetics

  • What she wishes more people knew

  • The personal habit she is most proud of

More about my honored guest:

Kari Knight is a family nurse practitioner who is certified in dermatology. She has a background in emergency medicine, but has worked in dermatology for six years, and opened her own dermatology practice in June of 2020.

Her skincare obsession began about a year before her plant based/vegan journey, and both are constantly evolving. She approaches her patients, and the topic of vegan/cruelty-free skincare, with the deep belief that a scientific approach and a holistic one are not mutually exclusive. Ms. Knight is interested in utilizing medication when necessary, over the counter options when possible, and lifestyle interventions always. Kariknightdermatology.com
