#87: The Power of Food in Diabetes Prevention, Treatment and Reversal with Dr. Arti Thangudu

“Blood sugars can normalize literally overnight if you change your lifestyle and diet. -Dr. Arti Thangudu

Dr. Arti Thangudu is a triple board-certified endocrinologist who has learned how to apply the power of nutrition and lifestyle habits to better help her patients with their health conditions. She discovered the power of diet through her own personal experience with nutrition and then began applying what she knew to her work.

Last week we heard from Cyrus Khambatta about his program, Mastering Diabetes. I wanted to follow-up that conversation with the knowledge and experience of an endocrinologist. Endocrinologists are trained to manage chronic conditions of the endocrine system such as diabetes.

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, Dr. Thangudu tells us her story and why she practices in a way that approaches the whole person and the root cause of their condition. We discuss her approach to diabetes and the amazing reversals that she has had the privilege of witnessing. What she has to say is incredible and so inspiring. Physicians like Dr. Thangudu give me so much hope!

We discuss:

  • Her and her husband’s amazing stories of transformation

  • How diet and lifestyle changes can improve diabetes for patients

  • Diabetes reversal - is it real?

  • Advantages of a whole food plant-based diet beyond blood sugar control

  • Ketogenic diets and diabetes

  • The most common mistakes diabetics face when transitioning to a WFPB diet

  • If it’s possible to eat too much fruit

  • The power of exercise

  • The craziest fad for diabetes that she has heard of

  • What she wishes more people knew

  • What personal habit she is most proud of

More about my honored guest:

Dr. Arti Thangudu is a triple board-certified MD who specializes in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism and lifestyle medicine. She is also certified in plant-based nutrition and a certified yoga teacher.

Dr. Thangudu feels it is important to address the whole person more than simply diseases, which led her to leave the largest endocrinology practice in the country to create her own clinic, Complete Medicine, where she can do just that. In her clinic, she focuses on diabetes and chronic disease prevention and reversal by optimizing lifestyle thereby reducing need for medications. She spends time with her patients to identify the root causes of their problems, whether medical, social, nutritional or all of the above, and comes up with person-centered treatment plans for each individual.

Outside of her private clinic, she serves as the endocrinologist for the retired SAPD and San Antonio firefighters. She also engages her community by giving talks and partnering with local businesses to spread the message of healthful lifestyle. In her free time, she explores San Antonio and travels with her husband and two young children.
