#83: Preventing Food Allergies with Dr. Manisha Relan
“You don’t want to find out by accident, in an emergency situation, that there was a [allergic] reaction .” -Dr. Manisha Relan
In this second episode on the topic of allergies, I interview Dr. Manisha Relan who is a board-certified pediatric allergist and immunologist. Dr. Relan eats a plant-based diet and I wanted to know her perspective on food introduction for vegan and plant-based children. We have a very interesting discussion and I learned a lot!
We discuss:
How and why she made the switch to a plant-based diet
Introducing solids and whether vegan families should consider exposing their children to animal proteins
What to eat during pregnancy to decrease the risk of food allergies
If eating too much of a particular food can induce an allergy
The advantages of a diverse diet
The allergic triad
Preventing and treating eczema
What can be done to decrease the risk of food allergies
What she wishes more people knew
What personal habit she is most proud of
I hope that you find this episode helpful and that it helps you answer many questions that arise when feeding your child. Next week we will move on to a different topic! Have a plantastic week!
