#74: How to Optimize Your Immune System to Prevent Respiratory Infections

“Your immune system is not just active when when you’re lying in bed sick spiking a fever - it’s involved in a life-or-death struggle to save your life from the pathogens that surround and live inside you.” -Dr. Michael Greger from his book How Not To Die

It is definitely cold and flu season! Catching a respiratory infection is not fun at all, but catching the flu is risky as there are many that end up hospitalized or worse!

In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I talk about recently getting the flu, what factors are involved in catching a respiratory infection and what we can actually do to decrease our risk of getting sick.

Also, remember that there are certain things that we can do to decrease our risk, but we are all human and we are all vulnerable. We have different risk levels, immune systems and vulnerabilities. Please avoid health shaming others regardless of their diet and lifestyle choices. It’s not nice!

What I discuss in this episode:

Factors involved in catching a respiratory infection:

  • Exposure

  • Your antibodies

  • External factors that affect your physiology - stress, sleep, exercise, diet, mindset

How to decrease your risk of getting sick

  • Decrease your exposure and practice contact precautions

  • Get adequate sleep

  • Get regular exercise

  • Eat an antioxidant rich diet and stay hydrated

  • Keep a positive mindset

What to do if you get sick:

  • Watch for emergency symptoms - unexplained pain, difficulty breathing, dehydration, severe headache, call your provider

  • Rest

  • Stay hydrated

  • Honor your appetite

  • Stay away from the public - please dont spread and sanitize
