#150: Exploring Food Addiction, Shame and Transformation with Chuck Carroll
“I wish more people knew about the power that food has. And the connection it has with the brain, not just the belly.” -Chuck Carroll
Chuck Carroll grew up with rich foods and fast foods, but by the time he was 26 he was sometimes eating $20 of Taco Bell twice per day and consuming around 10,000 calories per day. He didn’t believe he was going to live to age 30 because he didn’t think he could ever to stop giving in to the strong cravings he experienced to fast food. It took extreme measures to help him change his habits and then several years later he discovered plant-based nutrition and became even more devoted to a healthy lifestyle. Now he wants to talk to anybody who will listen to his story so that he can offer hope to others that suffer.
In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I have a honest conversation with Chuck Carroll about his experience with food addiction and personal transformation.
We discuss:
How he got his nickname “The Weight Loss Champion”
How he got to the point that he was consuming 10,000 calories per day
What food addition means to him and when he realized he had an addictive relationship to food
How he differentiates food addition and emotional eating
How his self-image has changed
If he ever struggles with his body image
His thoughts on shame
If he regrets having weight loss surgery
What goes through his mind when he sees other people struggling like he did
The difference between quitting smoking and quitting fast food
If maintaining his weight loss feels difficult and what feels easy to him now
What he would do if he had a magic wand that could make his wildest dreams come true
What he wishes more people knew
What persona habit he is most proud of
