#129: Less But Better: Essentialism with Greg McKeown
“Relaxation is a responsibility, play is a responsibility and it is a discipline.” -Greg McKeown
Greg McKeown had an experience many years ago that helped him understand the importance of prioritizing. It was this powerful choice that launched his understanding and pursuit of essentialism. I am grateful that he has made it his life’s work to help others gain clarity in this area of their lives. I first read his book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, a couple years ago and have been slowly integrating the principles into my life. Greg defines essentialism as “a disciplined, systematic approach for determining where our highest point of contribution lies, then making execution of those things almost effortless.”
In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, we discuss essentialism and why it is important now more than ever.
We discuss:
The definition of essentialism and the crazy story of how he knew he needed it
Who essentialism is truly for
The first step in practicing essentialism
What we need to do first before allowing clarity to find us
How essentialism principles can be applied to family life
How to establish boundaries
Our modern school system and how to help children learn essentialist principles
The importance of play to essentialists
The definition of editing, why it is important and how to do it
How to build a system that produces to discipline to pursue essentialism
What he wishes more people knew
The personal habit he is most proud of
