#126: Iron, B12, Iodine and Omega 3's on a Plant-Based Diet with Dr. Gemma Newman (Nutrients of Concern Series)
“I wish people knew that they have all they need within them to start feeling better.” -Dr. Gemma Newman
Dr. Gemma Newman was very skeptical of a plant-based diet when her husband decided to try it to improve his long-distance running performance and recovery. However, once she did the research herself she started to see that there actually was evidence that it could be a healthy way of eating and living. Despite having experienced weight loss years before, her cholesterol was still elevated and she assumed it was simply her fate and passed down from her family. Her grandfather and father both died from heart disease. But she found that her cholesterol normalized when she adopted a plant-based diet.
Now Dr. Newman is a passionate advocate for plant-based diets and feels that it is her duty to inform her patients about this option for their health and wellbeing. In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, we discuss other nutrients of concern in a plant-based diet.
We discuss:
Her plant-based journey and the surprising effect it had on her health
What deficiency concerns she has for her plant-based patients
The top nutrients of concerns for plant-based eaters AND omnivores
The causes of iron deficiency and what foods in a plant-based diet are rich in iron
Why vegans need B12 and how much to supplement
Other nutrients that we may not hear too much about
Whether to supplement with Omega-3 DHA/EPA algae oil
What she wishes more people knew
The personal habit she is most proud of
