#120: How This Forward-Thinking Student Became A Catalyst for Change at His Medical School with Muzammil Ahmad
“I personally believe, from my conversations and my observations that people don’t want to teach something that they have a personal conflict with. It’s not a scientific-based conflict, it’s literally a personal conflict.” -Muzammil Ahmad
Muzammil did not take the direct path to medical school. In fact, he began his career in marketing for an oil company. But he could not find fulfillment there. It was only after a solo backpacking trip that he discovered that his passion was for helping others with their wellbeing. That led him to learn more about psychology and eventually to medical school. But he encountered his own health problems as a medical student, discovered plant-based nutrition and then quickly came to the realization that the medical curriculum focuses on illness and medical treatments rather than nutrition and prevention. However, he just couldn’t accept what he was hearing and started to do something about it. Eventually, he started a club at his school, a podcast and now is helping to overhaul his medical school curriculum. And he has big dreams.
In this episode of Veggie Doctor Radio, I have a conversation with this inspiring medical student about his journey to plant-based nutrition as well as what he is doing now to make a difference.
We discuss:
How he discovered plant-based nutrition and how it has changed his life
Why he chose to go to medical school
What has surprised him the most about medical school
The most frustrating thing that has happened in his medical education
How he started a podcast
What he thinks about the Canadian nutrition recommendations and if they are widely accepted in Canada
What would be his wildest dream come true for medical education in Canada
What he wishes more people knew
What personal habit he is most proud of
